In a highly anticipated match, expectation was for a flogging of the highest order. Japan a team who went through their most recent international competition undefeated. Russia, a team only at the Rugby World Cup because 3 other nations scored own goals, fielding inelligable players during qualification.
Japan had a slow start, buckling under the weight of a nation on their shoulders. Then, the unthinkable. Russia scored first, capitalising on a handling error.
It wasn’t until close to half time when Japan took the lead and control of the game.
The margin would eventually blow out to 20 with the Japanese winning 30 -10.
The Russians should hold their heads high though. This 20 point defeat won them a lot of friends and is probably the closest they’ll ever get to lifting the Webb Ellis Cup…
