The first match in the 2019 ‘Pool of Death” took place between France and Argentina. Both desperate to win given they also have England in Pool C. Only 2 teams will progress to the Finals and all 3 would fancy their chances.
This nail-biter ended up 23 – 21 in favour of France, but the lead changed hands a few times in the last 10 minutes.
With a penalty awarded to Argentina with 2 minutes left on the clock for a tackle on a player in the air, it looked like Los Pumas would snatch a famous victory. Sadly, the ball drifted to the left and France held on for the win.
Not only did they win the game, France also won the Penalty count, being penalised a massive 13 times to Argentina’s 5. Los Pumas need to cheat more and better! Their discipline was far too good to grind out this kind of victory.
The question on my mind given the quality of this match, will England miss the finals for a second consecutive World Cup? I sure hope so…
