This game was met with eager anticipation as one of the few games this week expected to be a close one. It would have been if not for countless errors on the part of the Canadians with the line open in front of them.
Hopefully it was only the cobwebs from being their first run of the tournament, but Canada squandered the opportunity to push for automatic qualification for RWC 2023. Being in a pool with New Zealand and South Africa means Namibia is now their only real opportunity for a win this tournament.
The Italians will be framing the table as it stands following the perfect start. I’ve heard a rumour they have been watching the Japan vs. South Africa replay from 2015 on repeat for research and inspiration.
This game along with many others has revealed a desire to offload at all cost. A brilliant move if you have the ball skills to pull it off, and a Tight head props delight if not.
It was always going to be disappointing after the highs of Fiji vs. Uruguay. But I can’t help but feel for the Canadians. So much heart, so little simple skills.
On a side note, nearly every nation is trying to play rugby like the 2011/2015 All Blacks. Guys, don’t worry about the past All Blacks. Worry about the 2019 version. The All Blacks know that game plan inside and out. And it’s a highway to nowhere.
Full Time Score: Italy 48 – Canada 7
