A win for Japan would all but secure a Quarter Finals berth for the host nation.
Japan were well organised in defence and withheld long periods of Samoan onslaught in this physical encounter.
With the overwhelming support of the local crowd, it was always going to be tough for the Samoans.
But what is truely remarkable is just how good Japan are looking. It’s hard to fault them. Ireland and Samoa are two solid and physical rugby nations. Not only did Japan pass their tests, they did so with flying colours… Red and white everywhere.
Japan, whilst still mathematically possible to miss out, are likely to make the finals. They need 1 competition point from the Scotland match to sneak in but on current form are likely to take all 5 and qualify top of the pool.
Don’t count your chickens, but red and white streamers would look nice on “Bill” don’t you think?
Final Score: Japan 38 – Samoa 19
