RWC Final Referee

Jerome Garces with blow the whistle (hopefully infrequently) during the Rugby World Cup decider.

This marks the first time a Frenchman will take control of the main game of a RWC.

Jerome has had an exceptional tournament including officiating the match between South Africa and New Zealand in the pool stages.

He will be assisted by Romain Poite and Ben O’Keeffe, with everyone favourite TMO Ben Skeen in the box seat.

In the Bronze final, Wayne Barnes will control that match for the second consecutive RWC.

Without taking anything away from Jerome’s performance, a part of me wonders if Wayne Barnes was penciled in for the decider only to be thwarted by Eddy Jones and his merry men.

There is already significant questions being asked about Nigel Owens shock omission from all duties this coming weekend. Perhaps an injury, or World Rugby has given him an early mark, to enjoy it from the stands?

In any case, let’s hope this weekend is all about the players and we forget who refereed the match because of inconspicuous yet effective management.

Edit: Nigel Owens has made himself unavailable for selection due to a calf strain sustained in the first half of the SF between NZ and ENG.
