Michael Cheika resigns

After a horror 24 months, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has made clear his intentions.

He will not seek reappointment after the Wallabies made a quarter final exit in RWC2019.

Rugby Australia CEO Raelene Castle threw him under the bus earlier today with an “open letter” to the Australian rugby public. Flagging his expiring contract as an area Rugby Australia are investigating. Nothing like knowing the boss has your back.

Cheika has been a wonderful servant of the game at provincial and national level, winning the title with the Waratahs and taking the Wallabies to the RWC2015 Final against expectations. This was following the disrupted preparations courtesy of Ewen McKenzie’s resignation in the lead up to the World Cup.

It is clear however that his position is now untenable. Having a win/loss ratio of roughly 50% he tied his fate to the Wallabies World Cup results this year. Having made his bed, it’s time for him to lie in it.

Hopefully he takes most of the board with him.
