Jaco Peyper is not my favourite referee by any stretch of the imagination, but he has me chuckling today.
Jaco has been a top quality elite referee for the best part of the last decade at Currie Cup, Super Rugby and international level.
He controlled the nail baiting Welsh victory over the French. Issuing a Red card to French lock Sebastien Vahaamahina following a blatant and stupid elbow to the head in broad daylight. The mind boggles how a top level international super star can throw his team under the bus with foul play in the era of the High tackle framework.
Needless to say Sebastien lost his head, and France lost the game.
Hours after the fact, whilst the dust was still settling. Jaco was snapped with Welsh fans, mimicking the elbow.
No doubt the French will create a storm in a teacup.
But this exciting revelation means Jaco has a sense of humour. Being impartial does not necessitate being devoid of personality.
A bit cheeky, yes, but Jaco had a remarkably good Quarter Final. This photo indicates to me he was satisfied with his performance and from an impartial observer he was more than adequate (even allowing for my natural bias against him.)
Well done Jaco, keep up the good work!
